Well I know I am in the premiums business but I thought it was very interesting to see that the San Francisco has taken the step to prohibit restaurants from giving away toys with meals that are high in calorie, fat and sugar! (from December 2011)

Apparently, they also require restaurants to provide fruits and vegetables with all meals for children that came with toys. Restaurants can include a toy with a meal if the food and drink combined contain fewer than 600 calories and less than 35% of calories come from fat.

It is an interesting debate; some believing that the government should not be involved in dictating how a company should promote their brand; that parents are quite capable in deciding where their kids eat and that the gift with the kids meal is the sole driver to the parental choice!

Well as a parent I like this idea. Of course, the gift is a major issue, kids love the free toys and don’t they always love the junk food? The US and UK have major issues with obesity and the long term health issues for our kids. And how about the NHS and the extra costs and demands on their resources!

So, this action gets thumbs up from me. And as for the toys there must be a healthier route to go?!

Toy Safety Changes

The Toy Safety Directive (2009 TSD) entered into force in July 2009 and will be applicable to toys placed on the market from 20thJuly 2011. The chemical provisions section will be applicable from 20thJuly 2013.

Manufacturers will need to conform to the requirements by means of a conformity assessment procedure and a safety assessment procedure. They must also identify the toy using batch /model numbers or similar and the manufacturers name, address and trade name/mark. When placing the toy on the market the manufacturer must draw up an EC declaration of Conformity (DoC) certifying responsibility for the compliance of the toy with the essential requirements of the 2009 TSD.

However did you know that importers placing a toy on the market also need to put on the item (or its packaging if it is not possible on the toy) their name, trademark/name and a single contact address which must be a street address or post box? Or that you need to keep a copy of the manufacturers DoC for a period of 10 years after the toy has been placed on the market?

It is important to understand your responsibilities under this directive so make sure you find out now, to enable you to put procedures in place well before July 2011.
