Some recent general research uncovered some fairly useless but interesting little facts!

During various bits of research this week I have come across a few facts which I thought I’d share …

• Did you know apples are more effective at waking you up in the morning than coffee ?
• 1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours.
• If you piled all the Cadbury’s Creme Eggs made in a year on top of each other, it would be ten times higher than Mount Everest!
• 80% of office workers now claim they find out more about what’s going on at work over a cup of tea than in any other way.
• During the Olympics up to 25,000 people could be transported to and from Stratford International Station each hour on the Javelin® train from St Pancras International station, in less than seven minutes.
• Tiny spiders have such huge brains for their body sizes that the organs can spill into the animals’ body cavities.

Mostly useless info but interesting all the same – The Crème Egg research was an essential tool for the smooth running of the office….!!

A busy 2011 for The Sourcing Team – committed to our CSR

2011 has been a busy year here at The Sourcing Team  – however we take our CSR very seriously and here are just some of the highlights!

As you know, South London was in the news headlines for all the wrong reasons during August so we were thrilled to be able to  continue our support of One Life who do such great work across the South East working with young and old and helping bring communities together in a positive way.

We also contributed to the React Initiative which raises awareness in young people of drug and knife crime and other issues relating to public safety. Distributed to schools and support groups by the emergency services, this booklet is a really useful tool in keeping young people safer.

We have attended various charity dinners/events in aid of a variety of causes and will continue to support as many of these as we are able to next year.

Finally, we held our ‘alternative coffee morning’ in September and thanks to the generosity of clients, suppliers, staff and friends we raised a massive £2,227 ! This smashed our target figure and we would like to thank again, everyone who helped make this such a fun day and raise such a great total!

Next year we see the Diamond Jubilee and Olympic and Paralympic games on home soil – what a year to be part of such a vibrant, diverse community!

“Every little helps!”

Having recently come ‘out of contract’ on our gas and electricity tariffs and as part of our commitment to sustainable purchasing we decided this time round to look for greener options. Although the scope for greener gas tariffs is somewhat limited there is potential for SMEs and larger companies to improve their green credentials when purchasing electricity. A useful tool can be found at http://www.greenenergyscheme.org/ , which is an independently verified site where you can compare tariffs. This is a certification scheme in association with Ofgem. It ensures you are buying energy from a renewable source and that the supplier is doing more than their regulatory obligations. We chose Easygreen from E.On which is certified as offsetting 100% of the carbon emissions produced by your electricity consumption. We are, of course also using this as an opportunity to reiterate to staff the importance of using less electricity by printing less, switching off computers, lights, printers etc and generally thinking more carefully about the electricity we are using. To quote a well-known grocery chain….”every little helps!”

Reforms to EU public procurement laws to help SME’s!

Following a report by German green MEP Heide Rὕhle claiming that small & medium sized companies (SME’s) are disadvantaged when completing public procurement tenders, the Commissioner said that “simplification is the first priority” and / he would end the requirement to supply endless documents during the bidding phase – thank goodness! In place the bidders will have to produce a “solemn declaration” with only the successful bidder required to produce the documentation. It was interesting that he highlighted (presumably, across Europe?) that only 5% of contracts were awarded electronically and that steps were in place to increase e-procurement.

In addition, the “lowest price” criterion by which contracts are automatically awarded should be ended and “the most advantageous contract in terms of economic, social and environmental benefits” the recommended replacement. The report was formally adopted during the daily voting session on the 25th October 2011.

Public procurement back in February 2011 included within their proposals / that the prequalification process remains administratively burdensome, unnecessarily repetitive and a drain on resources and it seems that / the government is proposing to eliminate PQQs entirely for all central government procurements below £100,000.

In addition, Supply Management recently highlighted the EU Remedies Directive which took effect in December 2009 and is now starting to bite / with a sudden tide of litigation! Great – that to me means more cost to us the taxpayer in paying for legal cases.

Anything that helps simplify and speed up the overall tendering process is good. I sometimes feel the need scream very loudly here at The Sourcing Team offices when it comes to tendering for public sector business. I know many share the feelings – huge amounts of information at prequalification (PQQ) stage, the filling out of, in many cases, awful templates and that’s just to be get to the invitation to tender. Then the tenders themselves – and very often dates and feedback are not met or supplied after all that work? My concern for public sector is that they are missing out on some very exciting, innovative and “best value” suppliers because frankly, it’s made such hard work for often, not particularly valuable contracts. Sadly, the process doesn’t work for SME’s and it needs an enormous amount of change – ideally, led by someone who actually, understands the world of the SME.

“Fit for purpose” is what I think we all want to see – knowing our money is being spent wisely, and eliminating waste – for the bidders and the local authorities. Time is precious and there should be more respect for the time of an SME – Heide is on the right lines!

Promotional merchandise can deliver higher or equal ROI than most forms of advertising!

New statistics show conclusive link between promotional merchandise, branding and sales!

Key findings:

• Promotional merchandise can deliver a higher or equal ROI than most forms of advertising

• 66% of respondents said they could remember the brand on the promotional product they received during the last year

• 79% said they were likely to do business with the company in the future

• 8 out of 10 (84 per cent) respondents said that a branded promotional gift increases brand awareness

• Over three quarters (87 per cent) of recipients said they kept a promotional gift for longer than 12 months

• Over half (56 per cent) of respondents said their opinion of the brand/company was more favourable after receiving the promotional product

The first ever in-depth independent national survey into the power of promotional merchandise in the UK questioned businessmen and women about their behavioural trends and preferences for different promotional gifts.

One of the most significant findings of the survey is that promotional merchandise can deliver a higher ROI than radio and outdoor advertising and a ROI that is equal to TV and print advertising. The cost per impression for a mug is £0.001, a mid-range pen £0.001, a calendar £0.004, a USB stick £0.005 and an umbrella £0.003. With an average cost per impression of £0.003, these figures compare extremely favourably with the cost per impression of other media with TV coming in at £0.008, radio at £0.003 and advertising hoardings at £0.003.

The survey also examined how much the respondents opinion changed after receiving a promotional item, giving a measure of how such products can affect feelings, perceptions and buying activity. Over half (56 per cent) of respondents said they felt more favourable towards the brand/company. When asked how much more or less likely they were to do business with the company in the future after receiving the promotional item over three-quarters (79 per cent) said they were more likely. While over four-fifths (84 per cent) of respondents stated that a branded promotional gift increases awareness of the brand, 63 per cent of respondents said they preferred to receive a promotional gift with logo branding on and 37 per cent indicated that they prefer to receive an unbranded gift. Nearly half (45 per cent) of people surveyed would most like to receive a USB stick, while 39 per cent would like a pen, 39 per cent an electrical item and 36 per cent a mug. The reasons for these choices are clear, as when asked what types of promotional gift they found most useful 21% stated a USB stick, 11 per cent an electrical item and 10% a writing instrument.

18 per cent of respondents stated that they had kept a mug for the longest period of time, 15 per cent a USB stick and 12 per cent a pen, with around one-third (33 per cent) indicating they had kept an item for between one and two years and 30 per cent between three and four years, highlighting that around 87 per cent of recipients had kept a promotional item for longer than 12 months.

The impact of promotional merchandise on the recipient is shown by the items that respondents remember receiving in the last 12 months, with 44 per cent recalling receiving a pen, 34 per cent a mug and 31 per cent a calendar, with USB sticks and stationery coming in at 22 per cent and 18 per cent respectively.

The Sourcing Team’s Macmillan Coffee Morning with a “twist” was a wonderful success, raising £2,207.00 for the charity!

Wow! What we can say? A massive ‘thank you’ to everyone, those who made an on line donation, those who generously donated prizes for the event and everyone who attended on the day to make it a day to remember! A very special thanks to Mete & Wayne from OneLife, a charity helping communities across the UK – who supported us on the day, showing our guests how to mix up their music and how to DJ! A massive thank you to my wonderful team here at The Sourcing Team – they put in so much hard work and fully embraced the event .. making me very proud of them on the big day! And special thank you also to Stevie Greenslade for giving up his day off to be our man on the door!

We had a great day here at the office, with all sorts of ways for people to spend their money – from raffles to guess the number of jelly beans to making music with our guest DJs! Interestingly guess the baby (with now and then photos of the team) proved more difficult than we thought!

The weather was perfect, the cakes delicious and the lunchtime BBQ was incredibly well attended!
As you know, all on line donators plus those that made a donation on the door were entered into our free prize draw. The winners of that draw and the other prizes from the day are listed below.

Some of the quotes from the day!
Emma Robinson – Macmillan Cancer Support – “I just want to say thank you again for the coffee morning. It was really fantastic and the money raised can go a really long way to helping people affected by cancer. It was a really fun day”

Oliver Hickson – Hickson Communications – “it was a really good day, a great opportunity to meet like-minded people for such a good cause, and we were very lucky with the weather and had a lovely BBQ – probably the last one of the year!”

Nichola Cain – Voice Communications – “Wow what an event The Sourcing Team put on to raise money for MacMillan. I drove a couple of hours to be part of the day and am so pleased I did. The whole team got behind the day, put on a fantastic number of initiatives to raise funds and made everyone feel welcome. The cakes the team baked and the BBQ were delicious. To top it all off the weather was perfect. Well done to The Sourcing Team – thanks so much for including me in such a special and unique day.”

Dean Clark – Turpin Barker Armstrong – “….On behalf of myself and my colleagues, we would like to express our thanks to everyone at The Sourcing Team/Macmillan for a thoroughly enjoyable day. Right from the moment we first arrived, we were made to feel very welcome and the format of the day was excellent, with emphasis placed on just having fun. We especially enjoyed ‘ditching the suits’ and playing at being the next big DJ’s to be discovered, as we mixed our own CD’s. (A big thanks to the guys at Dance Aid, they were fantastic, and at least ‘pretended’ to like the music mixes put together by us amateurs). We were happy to be part of the day and to help in raising funds for this very worthwhile charity. – See you all next year (if invited of course !!!!)”

Andrew Hill – Senator Pens – “Many congratulations to The Sourcing Team for a superb open day fund-raiser for Macmillan. Not only did TST give up a full trading day, but they created a fun and interactive environment where all the invited attendees found themselves getting totally involved. I really enjoyed contributing to such a worthy cause in such a positive atmosphere…..and the superb weather really was the icing on the (Macmillan) cake….”

Paul Mclellan – bpma – “I had a fantastic time at the Sourcing Team’s Macmillan Coffee Morning…. /Day/Evening! – Gill’s Team were fantastic hosts and for them to raise over £2k for Macmillan was fabulous.”
